Intended learning outcomes:

The purpose of this module is to give students a foundational understanding of Sanskrit grammar, enabling them to translate basic sentences both from Sanskrit into English and from English into Sanskrit by the end of the term. During the first two weeks, students will learn to read and write the Devanāgarī script alongside the International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST). As the module progresses, students will build a firm grasp of essential grammatical principles and introductory vocabulary.

By the conclusion of Sanskrit 1A, students will be able to:

  • Read and write Sanskrit using both Devanāgarī and the International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration.

  • Show a good understanding of the Sanskrit sound system, including vowel gradation patterns.

  • Conjugate thematic verbs in the present indicative active.

  • Form and employ the past passive participle, the absolutive, and the infinitive.

  • Decline masculine and neuter -a‑stem nouns and adjectives, and use these forms to interpret and compose simple Sanskrit sentences.

We shall cover the grammar topics introduced in chapters 1-7 of Antonia Ruppel's textbook, The Cambridge Introduction to Sanskrit.
