This is a basic introductory language acquisition module for absolute beginners in the written and spoken language; students are not assumed to have any previous knowledge of the language or its script. The module covers several basic constructions of the language, enabling students to acquire basic skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking. Successful students will gain the ability to read and write short simple texts, and communicate on simple everyday topics at Lower A1 of CEFR or Band 1 of HSK.
Textbook: New Practical Chinese Reader book 1. At the end of Semester 1, L1 to L8 will be covered.
CH1A (book 1 L1-L8) in Semester 1. If you successfully pass CH1A, you may continue for CH1B (book 1 L9-L14) in Semester 2. There are different versions of New Practical Chinese Readers in the market and stock could be limited for a particular version, we, therefore, ask students to buy the version from Hanban UK, which is about 15-minute walk from SOAS at 124 Euston Road, London, NW1 2AL.
