Intended learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module a student will be able to:
- Articulate a historical and critical understanding of contemporary theories of violence and conflict in developing countries.
- Show a nuanced understanding of different, contradictory linkages between violence/violent conflict and development, something that international organizations and government departments as well as well-known think tanks recognise and themselves try to think through.
- Demonstrate a strong awareness of the types of data that are available and of the problems with empirical foundations of theoretical claims and policy recommendations about violence and conflict.
- Analyse issues of considerable complexity, topicality and political significance, to draw on different sources of information and different analytical perspectives, in order to express his or her own reasoned and substantiated views clearly and concisely.
