Intended learning outcomes:
By the end of this module, students should be able to:
- Explain the relationship between conflict, gender and sexual norms, and gender- and sexuality-based oppression in the Middle East.
- Discuss the importance of contextualising and historicising when attempting to make sense of gender and sexual norms, as well as gender- and sexuality-based oppression in the region.
- Trace the historical, economic and socio-political conditions enabling the persistence of gender and sexuality-based oppression in the Middle East.
- Challenge the popular reliance on static understandings of culture, tradition or religion for making sense of gender- and sexuality-based oppression in the region.
- Explain key feminist and queer theories for making sense of the link between gender, sexuality, conflict and violence.
- Describe and analyse examples of feminist and queer resistance in the Middle East.
