Module dates: Semester 1
Intended learning outcomes:

  1. To be able to critically evaluate a range of theories and ethnographic source material relating to Southeast Asian society.

Throughout the term, we will critically read and discuss seminal texts from SEA that have been influential in Anthropology.

  1. To be able to locate and use secondary sources relevant to selected topics.

The Anthropology Studios every other week will complement lectures and readings through ethnographic engagements with themes discussed in the module.

AS1 is especially designed to support working with secondary sources by locating relevant texts and annotating the bibliography.

  1. To have a grasp of the key debates in the anthropology of Southeast Asia.

Through an artful ethnographic approach, we will discuss built environments, contemporary art, archives, and sound.

  1. This will form a base which will enable postgraduate students to write their dissertations (10,000 words) on a topic relating to Southeast Asia should they so wish. Skills in reading and contextualizing works on Southeast Asia are readily transferable to other regional studies.

Anthropology studios in alternating weeks are practice oriented, to explore different modes of artful ethnography to approach studies of the region.
