Intended learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this Module the learner will be able to:

LO1   Demonstrate a clear understanding of the complexities in the relationship between Human Rights and Islamic Law.
LO2   Understand the complexities relating to the theories and application of international human rights law in the Muslim world
LO3   Analyse the relationship between human rights and Islamic law, and evaluate the human rights policies and practices of modern Muslim-majority State
LO4   LO4. Evaluate the scope of the rights of minorities, women's rights, children's rights, the right to fair trial and due process in relation to Islamic law; case studies of selected Muslim-majority states; and human rights implementation in Muslim states generally.
LO5   Undertake further critical independent research on the subject.
LO6   This half module complements the Human Rights and Islamic Law I module taught in Semester 1 to form a complete coverage of the Human Rights and Islamic Law course. Taking both modules would provide a comprehensive coverage of the theoretical and practical relationship between human rights and Islamic Law as part of the LLM programme in Human Rights Law, the LLM programme in Islamic Law and other relevant programmes.

Assessment 1: Format: A written assignment of 2000 words submitted in accordance with SOAS regulations, arrangements and deadlines. Assignments must be of high academic standard and include footnotes and a bibliography. The assignment question will be given to students during the course. Late submission will result in deduction of marks. Please note that extensions CANNOT be granted unilaterally by the module Convenor. Students with extenuating circumstances must apply for consideration through standard procedure on forms available from the Student Support Office.
