• Assess the expansion of Buddhism and Hinduism in Southeast Asia along maritime networks and the eventual construction of immense sacred ceremonial centres from the 3rd to the 14th centuries CE.

• Appraise the political, religious, and social contexts that generated the rich cultural heritage visible in the sculptural, architectural, and archaeological remains of the region.

• Evaluate the approaches and methods used by the disciplines of art history and archaeology to reconstruct the histories of these maritime societies from the material and the textual record left incomplete in this tropical environment.

• Formulate the ability to situate the art and archaeology of Southeast Asia within the larger Indian Ocean World historical context.
