Intended learning outcomes:
Objectives
- To introduce students to the foundations of international law including its relationship to colonialism and imperialism;
- To provide knowledge of how international law is formed and applied through the development of customary international law, treaty law and the work of international organizations;
- To introduce students to critical perspectives of international law including feminist and third world approaches to international law (TWAIL);
- To introduce the students to contemporary developments in international law;
- To develop the student’s critical thinking skills;
- To develop students' legal research and writing skills;
- To encourage critical reflection on the role of international law and the international legal order.
Outcomes
At the end of the course the students should be able to:
- Identify and analyse critically the foundational concepts in Public International Law;
- Compare and appraise the role of different theoretical approaches in understandings of Public International Law;
- Discuss recent developments in Public International Law and think more critically about the role of International Law and the international legal order;
- Arrange the knowledge in (1) to (3), above, into coherent responses to an exam-based assessment.
