The purpose of this module is to introduce the principal practical, theoretical and methodological problems associated with postgraduate research in law, which at the SOAS School of Law, Gender, and Media often takes a distinctly interdisciplinary and fieldwork-oriented angle. In our weekly seminar sessions, you will encounter a wide range of methodologies and methods associated with critical approaches to law and legality, including doctrinal methodology, socio-legal studies, legal anthropology, legal history, critical legal studies, Islamic legal studies, critical race theory, and feminist and queer legal methodologies. Your individual research project – especially its methodological aspects – will be given due attention, though you will also learn through weekly interaction with your diverse seminar leaders and classmates.
